“Do you wish to take the paper with you?” Usaburo asked. “If you prefer, I can also arrange delivery anywhere in Edo, at no charge.”

“In that case, deliver it to the Kaeru Ryokan.” Hiro handed the artisan a silver coin. “Before we go, do you know anything about the cause of the recent fires in Edo?”

“I understood the magistrate ruled them accidental.” Usaburo looked suspicious. “Has new evidence come to light in the wake of last night’s fire?”

“No,” Sora answered. “Magistrate Hōjō simply asked these men to confirm his findings.”

“Interesting.” Usaburo returned his gaze to Hiro. “How long will your investigation run?”

“A week at most,” Hiro replied.

“I will call a meeting of the washi guild and ask about this issue. If I learn anything of note, I will send word to you at the Kaeru Ryokan.”

“We would be happy to attend the meeting,” Father Mateo said.

Usaburo narrowed his eyes at the priest. “That would not be convenient.”

“Thank you, but it’s no trouble,” the priest replied, “we are happy to make ourselves available on your schedule.”

“It would not be convenient because I did not invite you to attend.” Usaburo gestured to the door. “Now, our transaction is complete, and you may go.”
